OpenBazaar: Decentralized markets for decentralized money

OpenBazaar: Decentralized markets for decentralized money

This story begins in April 2014 during the Toronto Bitcoin Hackathon. Amir Taaki and his team created the proof of concept of a decentralized marketplace, called "DarkMarket". Some months earlier the FBI seized the famous dark market Silk Road and Amir decided to develop a more secure and decentralized dark market, to overcome the Silk Road weakness and vulnerabilities.

This is just a simple prototype, but we wanted to show people that it’s possible” Amis Taaki says. “But this is going to happen. If not us, someone else will do it.”

The developer Brian Hoffman forked the project and renamed it "OpenBazaar". First release come online on April 4, 2016.

Existing centralized marketplaces like Amazon and eBay have had decades to build up an impressive suite of features for their users. Our first release has the advantage of 0% fees and using Bitcoin, but it will be a long time before we are as feature-rich as the big platforms.

OpenBazaar works like Bittorrent, in fact is is a peer to peer network that is not controlled by any company. Selling pages are hosted through the whole network, there is no Amazon, eBay or other centralized network that keep trace of every single action. You simply install the OpenBazaar application and you are directly connected to all other people, you can sell and buy goods from all over the world with an high level of anonimity and security. To increase the anonimity you can purchase by using the TOR network, being a shadow!

As for now, the only payment method accepted is Bitcoin, to keep anonimity during the transaction.

Unlike Amazon, eBay and other eCommerce market, OpenBazaar is a NO FEE market. You pay what you buy! There isn't a centralized authority (market) or issuer (credit card) that you HAVE to pay in orde to purchase a good.

It's just simple as ride a bicycle!

Vanitygen a Vanity bitcoin address generator

Vanitygen a Vanity bitcoin address generator

What is a Vanity Address?
It's a classic bitcoin address that starts with some string of characters or regex that you prefers. It's just like having a personalised number phone on your mobile! The main problem with vanity addresses, is that in order to create them, we need to brute force a lot of addresses, because the search for a pattern is probabilistic. There is no way to brute force the address generator without a brute force. It's just like find a password for a desired username.

So, do you want a custom Bitcoin address, for example 1ThisIsMineNngkoXEeobR76a53LETnpyT?

Sound strange, but it's possible! With VanityGen you can create your unique bitcoin address starting with your desired words.

Vanitygen is a command line tool that accepts as input a word, a pattern or list of patterns to search for, and produces as output a list of addresses and their private keys. Vanitygen's algorithm is probabilistic and the amount of time required to find a given pattern depends on how complex the pattern is, the speed of your computer, and whether you get lucky!

Example of performance:

  • Dual-core desktop CPUs, 32-bit mode: 100-250 Kkey/s.
  • Dual-core desktop CPUs, 64-bit mode: 150-450 Kkey/s.
  • Quad-core desktop CPUs, 32-bit mode: 200-400 Kkey/s.
  • Quad-core desktop CPUs, 64-bit mode: 300-750 Kkey/s.

Vanitygen is secure, but you should run the tool in a black box and out of internet PC, to be sure that nobody read your private keys generated.

10 Reasons why Bitcoin is better than PayPal

10 Reasons why Bitcoin is better than PayPal

Today I just found out this website: http://www.paypalsucks.com/ defined as "the world's largest eBay and PayPal consumer gripe site network!"!

It's a collection of stories about account locked, high fees, payment delayed, customer service compliants and much more.

Briefly I'll post my 10 reason why Bitcoin currency is much better than Paypal system.

1) Fee

Paypal fee are about 3%, but there are case with fee up to 15%! On the other hand, Bitcoin could be zero-fee, but a minimum fee is required in order to include the transaction in the next blocks. With Bitcoin, the amount of the transaction is not relevant: if you send 1 cent or 1 billion’s, the transactions fee is the same (https://bitcoinfees.21.co/).

2) Decentralized

Bitcoin is a decentralized crypto currency. You have everything under your control, there is no bank or entity with the control of the network. Bitcoin made real an automated payment process which doesn’t require you to trust anyone.

3) Open source

Bitcoin is open source. Do I need to say something else?

4) Full control

You are the only owner of your founds, you are your own bank. With PayPal account, users are at mercy of the service providers.

5) Privacy

One main feature of Bitcoin is focused on security. With bitcoin you are anonymous, you don't need to verify your account by linking it to your bank account, you don't need to send personal information. You just need to keep in mind your private key!

6) Versatile

With paypal or other payment system, for example HCE (Host card emulation), you need an internet connection, a smartphone, a credit card etc. With bitcoin you can send transaction offline, via SMS, via mail or even via the indestructible Nokia 3210! This is an innovation and could help people in developing country with lack of infrastructure.

7) No chargeback

With Bitcoin, once a transaction is sent and confirmed, cannot be reversed. If you want your money (BTC) back, you need to ask the output of the transaction (if you know him) to create and sent a new transaction. With paypal, the chargeback is a daily "Feature", lot of Merchant gone in trouble due to bad consumer that take advantage of chargeback feature.

8) Accessible

What if you haven't a bank account, but you keep your money under your bed? You can't use paypal! With Bitcoin, you only need to remember your private key! Bitcoin is fully accessible all over the world, there are no country that can "ban" bitcoin usage and spread!

9) Global

Bitcoin is available all over the world. Paypal is banned on some country. What else?

10) Asset

Bitcoin is a potential asset. If you had purchased 1BTC one year ago, now you almost have the double amount corrispective in dollar. It's an investment. Buy it :)

Phishing in Darkweb to steal Bitcoin - Michael Richo

Phishing in Darkweb to steal Bitcoin - Michael Richo

WALLINGFORD - Michael Richo, 34, was arrested Wednesday on a criminal complaint charging him with credentials theft, bank fraud, identity theft and money laundering. He has developed a system with the aim to steal bitcoins via phishing in the darkweb.

The Man has developed dozens of phishing web-pages identical to some black market, sponsored the link in different forums and waited for the victims login in order to steal their credentials. Once in possession of credentials, the man used the credential and login on the real site, widthdrawing their bitcoin wallet address. He stole more than 15,000 credentials.

Although phishing is going out of "fashion", in the deep web, especially with the onion Protocol, phishing is difficult to identify. Websites are provided with link composed of random letters and numbers and it is difficult to identify the actual site or the fake one.

Here are some of the main site Alphabay onion:

alphabaywyjrktqn.onion
pwoah7foa6au2pul.onion
stbux7lrtpegcra2.onion
jsbpbdf6mpw6s2oz.onion
zdfvqospmrbvzdn3.onion
sszoxp4dqmt24jng.onion
nracund2vx6lxzck.onion
lo4wpvx3tcdbqra4.onion

In order to collect the money, the man exchanged bitcoin with FIAT currency and then deposited it on a traditional bank account.

Richo was released on a $100,000 bond.

How to survive a Bitcoin Fork

How to survive a Bitcoin Fork

After the Ethereum fork and the DAO event, lot of people went crazy and confused about what kind of crypto coin they had: Ethereum or Ethereum Classic? What will happen to my Ethereum? In the last months, some people start talking about a Bitcoin fork https://www.reddit.com/r/Btcfork and what will happen after.

If a Bitcoin fork happen, from that moment there will be at least two blockchains with all transaction history from the 2009 till the fork (we can call it BitcoinX or BitcoinFork):

  1. Bitcoin
  2. BitcoinX - BitcoinFork

If a wallet has 100BTC, this wallet will be present on both blockchains and it means that this address can spend 100BTC on each blockchain! But the two crypto coins will be different. One supported by one group of people and the other by another group of people. And both will have different values.

Without doing nothing, all Bitcoin will be doubled.. just like the "Back to the future" timeline with two different "past" that creates two different "future".

If you are the only owner of your private keys, you can do whatever you want: keep all BTC from both blockchains or sell some of them, but keep an eye on the exchange market in case of a quick dump or pump!

So, how to survive?

  • Export your keys in a safe place
  • Keep in a safe place the private key
  • Don't trust exchanges, never leave BTC on an exchange
  • Keep in a safe place the private key
  • Read and follow the news
  • Keep in a safe place the private key
  • Don't panic! You're not alone!
  • Keep in a safe place the private key
  • As above

Live Bitcoin Segregated Witness Charts Adoption

Live Bitcoin Segregated Witness Charts Adoption

Segregated Witness is the solution proposed and developed by the Bitcoin Core developers team. The source code for SegWit feature entered in the latest Bitcoin code client and SegWit activation is started! But this is only the first step of the activation process that need 95% of network consensus before it will fully activate on the Bitcoin network. Since all mining pool can decide to adopt one client or another, it will be very difficult to have a majority network consensus in few weeks. For example ViaBTC, a Chinese mining pool representing over 5% of the network hashrate, does not support SegWit and if the hashrate keep increasing, it will be difficult to achieve the 95% of the network consensus.

You can see the live bitcoin SegWit charts adoption here:

Today, 15h00 2016/11/16 the adoption is 3.075%
